Why tongue weight matters
Tongue weight is the downward load applied to the hitch by a trailer. The percentage of total trailer weight carried at the tongue can affect stability, steering and handling. Moving cargo forward or backward changes the tongue load, so a trailer that is within its gross weight limit can still have an unsuitable distribution.
