How Trailer Tongue Weight Calculator Works

Estimate trailer tongue weight percentage from total trailer weight and measured tongue load. The calculation runs locally in your browser and does not require an account.

Method: Tongue-weight percentage = tongue load ÷ gross trailer weight × 100

How to use it

  1. Enter values using the units shown.
  2. Check your source measurements and assumptions.
  3. Calculate and compare scenarios before making a decision.

Limitations

Trailer Tongue Weight Calculator is an estimation aid. For a critical result, compare the inputs and output with the applicable standard, manufacturer data, project specification, site condition, or qualified professional review.

Why tongue weight matters

Tongue weight is the downward load applied to the hitch by a trailer. The percentage of total trailer weight carried at the tongue can affect stability, steering and handling. Moving cargo forward or backward changes the tongue load, so a trailer that is within its gross weight limit can still have an unsuitable distribution.

This calculator is a planning aid only. Follow the tow vehicle, hitch, coupler, trailer axle and tire ratings, and use the manufacturer's recommended tongue-weight range. Measure the loaded trailer in a safe manner and account for passengers, cargo, accessories and fuel. If the trailer is unstable, do not attempt to correct it by guessing from a calculator alone.
