Radiant Floor Facts
- Electric radiant mats are cheap to buy and install (usually embedded in the cement under bathroom tile), but expensive to run continuously. They are designed for comfort in small areas, not whole-house heating.
- Hydronic systems pump hot water through PEX tubing under the floor. They are incredibly efficient and cheap to run, but require a dedicated boiler or water heater, making them very expensive to install.
- "Staple-up" installations are amazing for retrofits. If you have an unfinished basement, you can staple the heating tubes to the underside of the ceiling joists, heating the floor above without having to tear up the finish flooring.
