French Drain Facts
- A French drain is simply a trench filled with gravel and a perforated pipe. Water enters the pipe through the gravel and flows away from your foundation.
- Exterior drains rely on gravity. You must have a downhill slope of at least 1 inch per 8 feet of pipe to carry the water away. If your yard is flat, you will need a catch basin and a sump pump.
- Interior French drains are installed *under* your basement floor. The contractor must jackhammer a 12-inch wide strip of concrete around the perimeter of your basement, install the pipe, and repour the concrete. It is highly invasive but permanently solves basement flooding.
