- The most critical part of a custom shower is the waterproofing *behind* the tile. Tile and grout are not waterproof. If the builder skimps on the rubber liner or roll-on waterproofing membrane (like RedGard), your shower will rot the walls in a few years.
- Building a custom "mud pan" out of dry-pack mortar is a dying art. Modern foam board systems (like Schluter Kerdi) are vastly superior and completely waterproof, though the materials cost more upfront.
- Heavy frameless glass doors cannot be attached to standard drywall. The wall framing must have 2x4 blocking installed specifically where the hinges will go.
